THE MUMBAI MILESTONE PROJECT

Historic Markers | Restoration | Heritage Circuit | Heritage of Mumbai | Heritage Circuit
Client – Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM)
mi_1  H x W: 0 The Milestones were installed in the Island City of Mumbai in the early 19th century during the British Era, to mark the distance of various places from the centre of the Bombay fort.
They are obelisk shaped, monolithic dressed Basalt Stones with the distance in miles carved on their front, from zero mile which was 'St. Thomas's Cathedral'. They are designated Grade I Heritage structures. The trail of Milestones goes up to Sion, which was the boundary of the island city in the nineteenth century. The conservation project aims to restore and develop these historic markers and knit them into a proper heritage circuit in the present cityscape of Mumbai.
